The fiiiinal countdoooown

I've been giving Jason a bit of grief about going to see Europe in concert. I mean, what are they going to do, play The Final Countdown 20 times? I mean, the lead singer's name is Joey Tempest, for goodness' sake! They are one of the ultimate proponents of 80s hair metal (along with Def Leppard and Van Halen).

Well anyway, I just got a 20-second phone call from young Jason, holding the phone up at the gig so I could hear a chorus of The Final Countdown. What a moment. I haven't stopped laughing since I heard it :)

It seems Europe isn't the only band Jason's been seeing recently.

Shame On You!!
Europe didn't just have a hit with "The Final Countdown" (dun nun na na, dun nun nun nun na, dun nun na, dun nun nun nun nun nun na, dun nun na, dun nun na na na na na na naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa - Just do it in your head!!)Europe also had a hit with "Rock the Night", and I am proud to stand up and say say "I own a Europe CD", and "I know all the words to The Final Countdown", and "I used to have a Mullett!!"
Ok - I proud about the first two - the Mullett, not so much!!

Hehehehe, I'm not sure that any of those things are things I'd mention in public ;-)

I had a bit of a karaoke mondegreen moment with The Final Countdown while writing this post, actually; I've never really been sure of what the lyrics actually are, and after reading the lyrics on that page I linked to, I'm not sure I want to know. All I knew was it was something about venus (venus) and leaving together (together), and of course, it being the final countdown.

In classic 80s hair metal tradition, it makes no sense whatsoever. Compare and Contrast with "Rocket" by Def Leppard (http://www.doublelyrics.com/d/def-leppard/66221.html).

Heheheee... I think the most stirring moment was when Tempest abandoned his white electric in favour of a black acoustic and punched out the soulful ballad, "Carrie" (described by my brother as 'their dark-horse single').
It turns out they've got an official site at www.europetheband.com - it's quality.

Jason, just so you know, I spent the whole of that day singing The Final Countdown in my head. I could not budge it from playing over and over and over for at least 24 hours. And boy was I sick of it.

An now, to do the same to you: remember April Sun In Cuba by Dragon? I challenge you not to sing "welcome to the april sun in cuba, woah oh oh, doooooo-oooooo" :)

Then again, if you don't remember that particular awful insipid pop song of the 80s, you won't be singing that. hmm.
